Getting your car ready for winter

YOU can’t have helped but notice the grim weather at the moment – and it’s made it especially precarious for car drivers.

But on the plus side, the current cold weather is good for reminding people that now is the time to get their car ready for winter.

First of all, it’s important to check your tyres. The legal minimum of 1.6mm tread but during the winter a minimum of 3mm is vital because the deeper tread will be more effective at clearing water.

Anti-freeze, water, brake fluid, fuel and oil levels all need to be kept topped up but don’t fall into the common misconception  that hot water will defrost windows. Hot water can crack your windscreen and will just re-freeze as it cools.

Instead, clear any snow or ice manually and once inside your car, if the windows have misted up, use the air-con as well as the heater. It’s not just for those hot summer months. It will help to dry the air and therefore clear your windscreen.

There are great tips for dealing with hazardous driving conditions on the Suffolk County Council website. Access these by clicking below.
