Would a Tesco in Hadleigh lead to higher unemployment?

ACCORDING to the Hands Off Hadleigh campaign all but three of Hadleigh’s shops are backing them.

Speaking to www.hadleighpeople.co.uk Beverley and Andy Miles, two of the campaigns major supporters, have spoken out about the unemployment they think a Tesco in Hadleigh would cause.
“Even though Tesco say they will be bringing jobs to the town many people would loose their jobs because so many small independent shops in Hadleigh would have to close.”
Mr and Mrs Miles went on to highlight the fact that there is a Tesco supermarket at Copdock, only ten minutes drive away from Hadleigh.
Beverley said, “If Tesco really wanted business from Hadleigh they could offer free delivery from their Copdock store. I am sure lots of people would be interested.”
Andy and Beverley do not boycott Tesco but say they avoid doing a “big shop” there. However they know of some Hands Off Hadleigh supporters that refuse to buy anything from any Tesco store.

Well if there is a Tescos only a ten minute drive from Hadleigh and the independent shops are doing fine then maybe one in Hadleigh wont actually make such a negative impact on these little shops. I would want to know what effect the Tescos at Copdock had on these shops in Hadleigh when it originally opened. Did it make an impact then? What other small towns have suffered from such situations in the past? Would they be able to support the campaign based on their experience with these big chain stores opening in their own area?
