PEOPLE LIVING in Sudbury, Hadleigh and the surrounding areas have voted against Babergh District Council merging with Mid Suffolk District Council.

Overall 49.7% of those living in Babergh and Mid Suffolk voted for the merger whilst 50.3% said 'no'.

It was the voters in the Babergh District that were most strongly against the merger with just over sixty-per-cent of residents voting against it.

Before the voting began Babergh District Council and Mid Suffolk District Council agreed that the merger would have to get a minimum of 50-per-cent of votes in both areas for the plans to go on to the next stage.

This means that the planned merger, aimed at cutting costs will not be going ahead. Since the result of the vote has been announced there has been some interesting reaction on Twitter. Read on to see what people have been saying, and please feel free to post your own comments below.

- Andrew Grant Adamson @andrewga: "I feel the merged council would have been distant from electorate. Taking local out of local government."

- Darren @Sprinter156: "Not surprised at the no vote at all, there was little benefit to it for #Sudbury. Merging with another district is not the answer."

- Russell Smith @RussSmith: "Not at all surprised by the result, people of Babergh need flexible, responsive local services, not an enormous, unmovable mega council."

If this is true, why is it that Babergh employees are now doing work for Mid Suffolk? Who is paying their wages? Why are my taxes being spent on work for Mid Suffolk? ANd most importantly WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS WHEN we SAID NO to the merger??
